Since 2017, Unexplored Bastar has been instrumental in fostering community-based tourism at Chitrakote. They initiated this journey by training 50 locals from both sides of the Indravati River, empowering them with skills in tourism and hospitality. This effort has blossomed into a thriving ecosystem of self-help groups (SHGs) that manage various tourism-related activities like accommodation, boating services, and cleanliness drives.

Chitrakote’s tourism is built on local ownership and inclusive growth. The village operates 11 tourism businesses managed by locals, including homestays, eco-resorts, and food stalls. The village ensures that tourism’s economic benefits are shared equitably, creating a sustainable livelihood for its residents.

The SHGs have played a vital role in managing the destination’s cleanliness, safety, and maintenance, ensuring a welcoming environment for visitors. Local entrepreneurship is encouraged through the sale of indigenous products, from Chapra chutney to handcrafted souvenirs, promoting both economic sustainability and cultural preservation.

Conservation efforts in Chitrakote are deeply rooted in the community’s commitment to protect both its cultural and natural heritage. The village has implemented waste management systems and clean energy initiatives to maintain the environmental integrity of the Chitrakote waterfall.
